The Northampton
County 4-H program recently provided Ms. Clark’s second grade students, along
with Mrs. Ivey’s, Mrs. Pruden’s, and Mrs. Bell’s 3rd grade students with the experience of a lifetime! Under the guidance
of Mrs. Lawrence, representative of the program, the students were able to have
a full hands-on experience with the Embryology Project. The Project took only
about 18 days and all of the materials were provided to make sure the students
could take full advantage of the project; the eggs, incubator, detailed
instructions. Students were also provided with their very own Embryology
packets. Ms. Clark and new coming
teacher; Ms. Smallwood were able to integrate the Embryology Project into many
other subject areas such as reading, writing, math, as well as social studies.
The students were then able to connect the Embryology Project to real life
experiences. The class was successful with 8 newly hatched chicks! This truly
was a wonderful addition to the classroom and hopefully the students of the
future will also have this opportunity. The students were sad to see the chicks
go but it is certain that the chicks (Blacky, Frisky, Tweety, Lucky, Popcorn,
Highlight, Blackberry, and Sunny) will never forget them!

Gaston Elementary School students received $10.00 Wal-mart gift cards for
academic achievement. The students in
grades 2 through 6 were awarded the cards by the administration for making a
ten point or more gain on their benchmark tests. The benchmark tests measure their growth and help prepare them
for the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests.
The incentives were funded by the school’s PTA in an effort to motivate
students to do their best. Betty Bennett Honored for Service to Community

Recently, Betty Rose Bennett was honored at the Roanoke Rapids Theater at the United Community Connections event for her service to the community. Mistress of Ceremonies, Yvonne Jackson, said Ms. Bennett is known as a specialist with her "I Can Excel" tutoring center in Garysburg where she tutors children at no charge. The community honored her with beautiful roses and recognition of her lifelong work. One student referred to her a "fire escape" for helping students in need. One parent called her "a mother to all." She continues this good work as the Parent Involvement Coordinator at Gaston Elementary School. Congratulations, Ms. Bennett!
READ ACROSS AMERICA Teen Athletes Promote Reading at GES

Teen athletes at Northampton County High School West- STEM visited our school Tuesday as part of Read Across America Day. They came to help our students celebrate the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss and to read aloud stories in every classroom. Read Across America is sponsored by the National Education Association as a way to "Build a Nation of Readers." The event was planned to encourage all students to read and to show the younger kids that reading is "cool."
